Other Towns or Cities

Think Whitstable looks good in a square? Well, you might just have some great ideas for the next town to be “squared”…

Before you nominate your town, city, or favourite place, here’s a little “Squared Checklist” to get you thinking:

• ✅ Are there some iconic things to draw?
  (Landmarks, historic buildings, piers, quirky streets, harbours… basically, things that look recognisable just as a pen and ink drawing.)


• ✅ Worried about the shape of your chosen buildings or landmarks — that they won’t “fit” in a square?
  Don’t be! Sometimes it’s possible to zoom in, sometimes scenes or subjects can be spread over two or three squares (Whitstable's Wavecrest, for example, has been drawn over three squares). There’s always a way.


• ✅ Does the place you’re thinking about have a distinctive centre or focus?
  (A high street with character, a waterfront, a key cluster of landmarks—something that feels like the “heart” of the town.)


• ✅ Are there little details that make it special?
  (Patterned rooftops, unusual shopfronts, quirky signs, iconic transport—those small touches keep it alive when drawn.)


• ✅ Are some of its characteristics easily recognisable to people who love visiting and staying there? Do you love visiting too?
  (If the answer is “yes,” that’s the best sign it’s square‑ready.)
